Dunbar to compete in contract monitoring market

BALTIMORE-Dunbar Alarm Systems, part of the country's third largest armored car company, plans to break into the contract monitoring market in the next few months after its central station here received Underwriter's Laboratories approval last month.

The listing will open Dunbar Alarm Systems and its central station to a host of new types of customers who require UL approval for monitoring for insurance reasons, mostly commercial establishments such as jewelry stores, the financial sector, government installations and multi-location retail chains, said Sean Gibbons, director of corporate communications for The Dunbar Companies.

The central station currently monitors subscribers from the company's installation business, as well as its corporate facilities across the country, about 80 branches that house Dunbar's armored car division, said Ray Andrathy, director of protective services at Dunbar.

Andrathy declined to name how many accounts were monitored through the central station or the company's target number of dealers for the contract monitoring program because he said the company is located in a particularly competitive market, the greater Baltimore/Washington area. The company expects to begin offering the contract services sometime in the next two months.

"We've been monitoring Dunbar facilities for a long time," Andrathy said. "This adds another security product that we can offer to our family of customers."

Dunbar's central station, which has been in operation for about a decade, has 12 work stations and is housed in a 2,500-square-foot section of a corporate facility here.

With the new UL listing, Dunbar Alarm is also equipped to handle national accounts that are already serviced by its sister company, Dunbar Armored, as well as other Dunbar subsidiaries, which include Dunbar Guard Services, Dunbar Cash Vault Services, Dunbar Armored Air and Dunbar BankPak, a designer and distributor of security containers and banking supplies.
